What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapists work with people to enable them to participate in the activities of everyday life.  For example, looking after your own personal care needs such as dressing and eating, going shopping, working, hobbies or recreational activities.

How can Occupational Therapy Help Me?

Occupational Therapists help individuals to engage and participate in occupations or activities in everyday life. People with Neurological conditions often experience physical, sensory (eg. vision loss), cognitive or emotional changes which impact on their ability to participate in usual activities and roles. These can be related to personal care, managing a home, caring for others (eg. children), leisure etc. An OT helps identify these difficulties, strengths and weaknesses as well as activities/roles important to the person and works with them to improve independence and quality of life. An OT at Neuro Junction can provide the following:

  • Assessment to identify needs and goals

  • Assessment and specific training to address areas of difficulty (upper limb training, cognitive training, training in use of equipment)

  • Retraining in specific tasks in the home and community (eg. self-care, cooking, shopping, travel, study, recreation)

  • Assessment of home and community access and provision of recommendations for modifying the environment (eg. modifying the bathroom, arranging for grab rails)

  • Assessment and advice regarding aids and equipment (wheelchairs, bathroom equipment, feeding aids)

  • Education to clients, families and carers

  • Assistive technology prescription and training

  • Collaboration with Doctors and return to work providers when appropriate
